Our history and philosophy

López Oria is a family winery based in the town of Laguardia in the Rioja Alavesa region. Our family vines were first planted in 1940 by our great-grandfather, and wine-making has since become a family tradition. Now, the fourth generation of the family manages the winery, headed by an oenologist, Isabel López Oria.
In 1998 we built the current winery next to the vineyards, equipping it with modern technology but always keeping the traditional values of winemaking at the heart of our philosophy, to ensure the quality of the wine throughout the entire wine making process: from the grape harvest to the final bottling.

We believe in our methods and philosophy, and we are guided by two main principles:

Our vineyards and wine.

We have 26 hectares of private vineyards which have grown with the family and are between 30 and 50 years old. We grow Tempranillo red grape and Viura white grape. We have seven different wines, all D. O. Qualified Rioja, under our brand POLA.

We can be found in Laguardia, a town famous for its wine making connections. Our privileged location beneath the Cantabrian Mountains means that our vineyards are protected from the harsh winds in winter and exist in a Mediterranean micro-climate.

Made using the family recipe passed down from parents to children using the grapes from four parcels in Laguardia (Ribartallo, Morales, La Potra and La Paul) , with gobelet-trained vines between 30 and 34 years old.

TYPE OF WINE: Young Red Wine

CURRENT VINTAGE: 2018

VARIETY: Tempranillo (Destemmed) or Tempranilo/Viura (Carbonic Maceration)

ELABORATION: Thermal controlled alcoholic and malolactic fermentation.

TASTING NOTES Clean and bright. Intense berry red in color. Medium high intensity. Intense and persistent fruit flavours. Full bodied and fruity in the mouth. Smooth tannins and acidity which freshens the wines without affecting its smoothness.

RECOMMENDED: Suitable for cured meat, pulses, vegetables pasta, White meat and cheese.

POLA Lopez Oria

Single variety Tempranillo likened by its colour and power to a young wine, softened with liquorice sensations after aging in French oak barrel for 6 months.

TYPE OF WINE: Red Wine

CURRENT VINTAGE: 2017

VARIETY: Tempranillo 100%

ELABORATION: Thermal controlled alcoholic and malolactic fermentation.

TASTING NOTES: COLOUR: High intensity, clean and bright.

BOUQUET: Ripe fruit with hints of licorice

FLAVOUR: Good body and well balanced. This wine shows us the precise meeting point between its youth and maturity. As a sign of its freshness, we appreciate its bright, and after resting 6 months in the winery’s fretworks, it shows notes of liquorice and balsamic with a well balanced mouth.

RECOMMENDED: Suitable for meat, cereals, pastas, fish and all kind of cheeses.

POLA Crianza

The grapes for this wine come from three parcels in Laguardia (Los Monjes, Las Cañas and El Olivar) where the vines are an average of 45 years old. It is aged in French and American oak barrels to comply with the rules of the Rioja Designation of Origin Regulation Council.

The wine is made with destemmed grapes and spends at least 20 days macerating. It is then aged for 12 months in French (70%) and American (30%) oak barrels to combine the aromas and flavours of fruit and wood.

ELABORATION: Destemmed grape, controlled fermentation.

CRIANZA: French and American oak barrel, 12 months.

AGEING: In bottle, 6 months

TASTING NOTES Bright cherry red in colour. Delicate flavours with notes of vanilla and hints of red fruit. In the mouth it is very smooth, rounded and full flavoured. Classic Crianza `lavour with hints of fruit. Long-lasting flavour.

RECOMMENDED The perfect accompaniment to pulses, vegetables, canapés, White meat, small game, roast meat and cheese.

POLA Valecilla

Made exclusively with grapes from a parcel that takes its name from the surrounding landscape – Valecilla –

This single-vineyard wine fermented with destemmed grapes and macerated for more than 25 days before the aging stage, which continues for 18 months in French oak barrels and 18 months in the bottle.

ELABORATION: Destemmed grape. Thermal controlled. Malolactic and Alcoholic fermentation. Maceration period of 30 days.

CRIANZA French and American oak barrel, 18 months

AGEING: In bottle

TASTING NOTES: High intensity cherry red and bright. Delicate flavours with intense earthy notes and fruity base which reminds us of its origin. In the mouth it is a developed wine with delicate smooth, sweet, balanced tannins. Long-lasting flavours. Wine which develops well and can be kept over time.

DRINKING TEMP. 18 ºC

RECOMMENDED: The perfect accompaniment to cured hams, strong patés, high game, red meat and cured cheeses.

POLA Antonio Lopez – Premium Wine

This wine is a tribute to our origins, our history and expertise, a tribute to our father Antonio Lopez.

Grapes for this wine are chosen manually with strict quality parameters on the Matacaballo parcel, from gobelet-trained vines, making their production very limited. This parcel was planted by our grandfather and our father, so the name of the wine is our small tribute to their efforts.

The wine is made with the greatest care from destemmed grapes macerated for a long period. The aim is to extract from them the full essence of our land, our grapes and our family tradition to be tasted and felt in a single mouthful.
